A Solution for Chemistry – Professional Development Program for High School Science Teachers
Date: 23/06/2017 to 24/06/2017
The Department of Chemistry hosted a two day workshop “Professional Development Program for Science Teachers” in association with Royal Society of Chemistry. To support the Chemistry education program for school students in India, Dr. Yusuf Hamied (Chairman, Cipla) made a generous donation to impart 8,000 teachers across India with the knowledge and skills needed to deliver chemistry lessons.
The focus was on innovative programs that provide teachers with new tools for engaging chemistry lessons. Teachers were introduced to active learning techniques that can be applied easily in the context of Chemistry. Teachers also explored key topics in-depth – learning about the misconceptions students may hold and the ways to tackle them in the classrooms.
In this two day workshop – alongside mastering skills to make learning interesting and interactive – teachers also got the opportunity to try a few practical chemistry experiments which can be conducted in any setting. 75 teachers from 66 schools of Udupi district deputed by DDPI participated in this event.
Dr. B S Sherigara (former Vice-Chancellor, Kuvempu University) was the Chief Guest for the valedictory function and called for the implementation of new learning for which the teachers were trained during the workshop.
The workshop was held under the leadership of Dr. M P Yashoda (HOD, Chemistry). The program was coordinated with the help of Mr. Ershad Abubacker (Education Coordinator India from Royal Society of Chemistry and Deputy Director of Public Instruction (DDPI), Udupi).
