Manipal’s Strides Against Drug Abuse—5K Awareness Run
Organised by Manipal Runners’ Club, the 5K Awareness Run Against Drug Abuse began in the early hours of a bright Sunday morning on 23rd September 2018. A part of the series conducted by IIMRC, this run aimed to bring awareness about drug abuse to the people of Manipal and prove the town’s sincerity towards the issue.
Participants from all colleges and institutions across Manipal assembled in KMC Greens, donning neon green running shirts. After some warm-up and stretching, the crowd shifted to the starting point in front of the EDU building, pumped up for the run to follow. After words of encouragement from the organisers, the countdown to the run finally began at 7:40 am. Runners were to follow the standard Manipal 5k Marathon route, and water stations were set up and managed by volunteers at multiple points in the course.
As the last of the runners crossed the finish line, cheered on by volunteers and bystanders, the contingent headed to KMC Greens for a complimentary breakfast. Participating institutions were then presented with tokens of appreciation by the organising committee.
With a huge participation of 3,000 people, the run proved to be a huge success and a definitive step forward in combating the debilitating problem of substance abuse. “I think it was a wonderful initiative towards ridding Manipal of its tainted reputation as far as drug abuse is concerned. I had a great time, and this certainly was a rewarding experience”, said Rajeet Gangopadhyay, one among the many runners present that day.
