TechTatva’15: Carting Through Time

image_pdfimage_print

In the midst of the torrential rains that gripped the first day of TechTatva ’15, The SAE Club conducted one of its main events under Kraftwagen – Devil Karters.  At around 1.15PM, NLH 103 was deserted, except for the patient Event Head, Utkarsh Mehrotra, and his associates flocking about discussing a few glitches here and there.

There was a massive delay in the registration process.

Devil Karters, an event based on designing carts, had its general theory and CATIA Software teaching workshop along with a screening test on 28th, 29th, and 30th of September, during which thirty talented candidates were shortlisted from about close to 140 registrations. The thirty candidates were then allowed to distribute themselves into six teams of five members each.

The first day of the Devil Karters would involve the teams designing their own carts on CATIA software, provided by the event organizers, based on the pen-and-paper diagram that they had been required to come prepared with. Organizers from the SAE Club would work as a support system for the participants throughout the duration of the event.

The event kicked off at around two o’ clock, even as the room witnessed a poor turnout with only five of the six registered teams and an average of three students per team. Against the backdrop of these issues, a very sincere atmosphere was set in the room as talented minds were put to the test. Even the organizers seemed eager to help the participants in an effort to handle all their queries, often fielding multiple queries at once.
Two teams were shortlisted based on an analysis software called ANSYS which gives users the capability to materialize the design they worked so hard on.

Pieces of wood were precisely cut out to be neatly arranged into the chasis of the cart. A table was assigned to each team where the team members could be seen working fiercely, trying to transform their software design into successful working carts. As the sun approached the horizon and the deadline loomed nearer, the participants continued working zealously with an unwavering passion that would hopefully continue through to the next day.

Carts were built and ready to be tested by the end of the three challenging hours on the third and final day of the event. Mr. Ashwin Kumar Devaraj and Mr. Shyam Sundar, the two judges for this event, carefully put both life-sized carts through various tests to check the controlling and steering mechanisms based on which they would decide the winning team.
